The Red House Mystery is an immensely satisfying read. The ending, while not completely surprising, does allow a complex enough story to emerge (and interestingly, another parallel with The Moonstone is the fact that the crime is only made viable by the absence of knowledge and technology that we have today). It takes some thought and imagination on the part of the reader but the main character in an enjoyable amateur detective along the lines of Crispin's Gervase Fen/5(13).

Sometime during "the drowsy heat" of a summer afternoon when the house party is outdoors and only the secretary/confidant is waiting in the hall, the deed is done.
